Late To Grid: E21 – Mike Kubiak – SCCA Time Trails Racer

Podcast

Time Trials and Time Attack are hot topics these days so let's have another Time Trials racer on the show.

In this episode we have Mike Kubiak who is a third generation Corvette racer who truly grew up at Nelson Ledges Road Course.  At 12 years old he'd hop on the track after a race weekend and drive a manual transmission Camaro at 30 MPH!

Mike drives a 2003 Z06 in the Sport 2 Class in SCCA Time Trials events.  The car is mostly stock.

When Mike's not at the track he's working for Bridgestone developing tires for the OEs.

Mike shares some good advice including:
Watch YouTube videos prior to going to a new track – it's a great way to learn.
Nut & Bolt your car between events
Mentally run through the laps while sitting on grid

Here's what Mike brings to the track:
Bring a canopy for shade
Bring extra fuel
Extra tires
Water & Gatorade
Tools (not a full box, but a good set to get most things done)

If you are new to track days or Time Trials here's Mike's advice:

Get good brake pads and good brake fluid
Remove all items from your interior
Visual inspection
A good helmet
Leave the car alone – learn to drive and learn the tracks

Mike uses the Track Addict app and uses it with video to better understand where he can improve.

We also discuss the negative aspects to modding your car – which can put you into another class.  Be thoughtful in your selection of modifications.
