Atomic Autosports — Wickliffe, Ohio
Track Tire Mounting
& Road Force Balancing
Atomic Autosports mounts and road force balances track wheel and tire packages in Wickliffe, Ohio, on a Hunter Auto34S changer and a Hunter Road Force Elite balancer. Track wheels and race rubber ask for a different approach than a set of all-seasons: forged barrels need protecting, stiff sidewalls need working rather than forcing, and tape weights belong on the inside face rather than clipped to the lip. We mount this kind of rubber every week.
Balanced is not the same as round
What road force measures that a normal balance does not
A conventional spin balancer answers one question: where is the weight uneven. It solves that by adding weight until the assembly spins without wobbling. For most street tires on most cars, that is enough.
A road force balancer answers a second question. It presses a loaded roller against the tire while it spins, simulating the tire being squashed against pavement, and measures how much the assembly’s stiffness and roundness vary as it turns. That is radial force variation, and it is the reason a wheel can balance perfectly and still shake at speed.
On a track wheel and tire package, that second measurement is the one that matters.
Why track packages need it:
- R-compound and slick sidewalls are stiff, so a stiff spot produces real force rather than being absorbed
- Lightweight wheels have less mass to damp anything the tire does badly
- Wide, low-profile fitments have almost no sidewall left to hide variation
- Match mounting can cancel a wheel’s runout against the tire’s high spot instead of masking it with weight
- Less added weight means less rotating mass and fewer weights to throw
- A vibration at track speed is a distraction you cannot afford in a braking zone

Track wheel and tire work treated as part of a car’s setup rather than a commodity job. Wheels inspected and measured before anything is mounted, beads worked rather than forced, every assembly road force balanced and match mounted where the numbers justify it, then labelled by corner so the set goes back the way it came off.
200 treadwear extreme performance
- HPDE, autocross, street-driven track cars
- Streetable and forgiving to mount. Road force still finds the ones that will shake on the highway home.
Sub-200 R-compound
- Time trial, competitive HPDE
- Stiffer sidewall and less compliance. Match mounting pays off noticeably here.
Racing slicks
- Wheel-to-wheel, time attack
- Very stiff construction, careful bead handling, and a set that gets changed often across a season.
Lightweight and forged wheels
- Any serious track package
- Low mass damps nothing and finishes mark easily. Protection during mounting is the whole job.
Staggered and multi-set programs
- Racers running several sets
- Labelling and records matter as much as the mounting, so sets stay traceable across a season.
Inspect before we touch it
Wheels get checked for existing damage, prior repairs and runout, and tires get checked for date codes, heat cycles and wear pattern. You get a clear picture of what you have before anything is mounted.
Mount without marking
Race wheels come in expensive and go out the same way. The Auto34S is a leverless changer, so the mount and demount head works the bead without a pry bar levering against the rim edge, which is where most of the damage on an expensive wheel comes from.
Road force and match mount
Each assembly goes on the Road Force Elite. Where the numbers justify it, the tire gets rotated on the rim so its high spot cancels the wheel’s low spot before any weight is added.
Finish it for track use
Tape weights placed where they belong, valve stems and TPMS handled correctly, and every assembly labelled by corner so your set goes back on the car the way it came off.
How people use us
Three common jobs
Most of this work is seasonal. Spring changeover and mid-season set swaps are the two busiest windows, so booking ahead in March and April is worth doing.
Season changeover
- Street set off, track set on
- Road force balance on the track set
- Wheels inspected for damage and runout
- Assemblies labelled by corner
- Street set stored on the car or returned
New track package
- New tires mounted to your wheels
- Match mounted where the numbers justify it
- Road force balanced and documented
- Valve stems and TPMS handled
- Recommended starting pressures discussed
Chasing a vibration
- Road force measurement on all four
- Wheel runout checked independently
- Diagnosis of whether it is the tire, the wheel or neither
- Match mounting to correct where possible
- Honest answer when a tire is simply finished
Common Questions
Road force and track tire questions
What is road force balancing and how is it different from regular balancing?
A regular spin balance only measures where weight is uneven and corrects it by adding weight. Road force balancing presses a loaded roller against the tire while it spins to simulate the load of the road, measuring how the assembly’s stiffness and roundness vary through a rotation. Atomic Autosports runs a Hunter Road Force Elite at its Wickliffe, Ohio shop, which is how an assembly that balances perfectly but still shakes at speed gets identified and corrected.
What is match mounting and why does it matter for track wheels?
Match mounting means rotating the tire on the rim so the tire’s high spot lines up with the wheel’s low spot, cancelling the two out rather than masking the result with added weight. Atomic Autosports in Wickliffe, Ohio match mounts track assemblies where the road force numbers justify it. It matters most on lightweight wheels and stiff-sidewall race rubber, because there is very little mass or sidewall compliance available to absorb the variation.
Will you mount slicks and R-compounds on my forged wheels?
Yes, and protecting the wheel is treated as part of the job rather than an afterthought. Atomic Autosports mounts 200 treadwear tires, sub-200 R-compounds and racing slicks onto lightweight and forged wheels at its Wickliffe, Ohio shop, on a Hunter Auto34S, a leverless changer whose mount and demount head works the bead without a pry bar against the rim edge, so stiff sidewalls get worked rather than forced. Finished assemblies get tape weights on the inside face rather than clip-on weights.
Do you label wheels so they go back on the right corner?
Yes. Atomic Autosports labels every assembly by corner so a set goes back on the car the way it came off, which matters for tracking wear, heat cycles and pressures across a season. For drivers running multiple sets, the shop in Wickliffe, Ohio keeps that traceable rather than leaving four identical-looking wheels in the back of a trailer.
When should I book my seasonal tire changeover?
March and April are the busiest window, because that is when everyone in Northeast Ohio swaps to their track and summer sets at once. Atomic Autosports recommends booking ahead through that period. The shop is at 29251 Anderson Road in Wickliffe, Ohio and can be reached at (216) 329-4005 to get a changeover scheduled before the first event of the season.
My car shakes at highway speed after new tires. Can you find out why?
That is one of the most common reasons people bring a set here. Atomic Autosports measures road force on all four assemblies at its Wickliffe, Ohio shop and checks wheel runout independently, which separates a tire problem from a wheel problem from something else entirely. Where match mounting can correct it, the shop corrects it, and where a tire has simply reached the end of its life you get told that straight.
Context
What we do differently
Mostly it comes down to time. A high-volume tire shop is measured on cars per bay per hour, and a set of forged wheels wearing stiff-sidewall slicks is a slow job by that measure. The operators are usually perfectly capable and almost always under the clock, and that is what puts marks on a barrel.
There is also the matter of what happens after the balance. Track wheels want tape weights on the inside face, not clip-on weights hammered onto a delicate lip. Assemblies want labelling so they go back on the corner they came off. Nobody at a tire chain is being unhelpful about that. It is simply not what the process is built for.
We are not trying to be the cheapest option on a set of all-seasons, and we would not pretend otherwise. This side of the shop is set up for track sets, where the extra care changes how the car actually feels on the road and on track.
Hunter road force on site

We race on this rubber
The people mounting your slicks prep race cars the rest of the week. Heat cycles, date codes and pressure planning are normal conversation here.
Track Wheel and Tire Service in Northeast Ohio
Wheels and tires are part of the setup
Atomic Autosports is a motorsports shop in Wickliffe, Ohio, running track alignments, corner balancing, race-ready brakes, cooling work and full race car preparation. Wheel and tire service sits inside that rather than beside it, which is why a set of track wheels here gets treated as part of a car’s setup rather than as a commodity job.
If the car is in for an alignment or corner balance anyway, doing the tires in the same visit means the setup is done on the rubber you are actually going to race.
